FT: Carmakers in Thailand run low on gas

When Thailand dreamed of becoming the "Detroit of the East", the heart of the US car industry was still beating strong. But now the dream has soured.

Overall production this year is expected to fall more than 20 per cent and, according to John Bonnell of automotive analysts JD Power Asia Pacific, "the risks are all on the downside".

Mr Bonnell estimates that automotive production will decline from 1,378,363 units last year to 1,082,122 this year, a fall of 21.5 per cent.
